Why Santa Monica Is For The Cool And The Funky?

At the southern end of the USA’s famous Route 66, you’ll find Santa Monica, a city within the wider conurbation of Los Angeles. If you are a fan of murals, spectacular scenic stops, mouth-watering cuisine and of course just lying on the beach with your feet in the sand and a pina-colada in your hand  then you have found a soul mate in Santa Monica!

Santa Monica has for a while now become enveloped by the glitzy excess of the Los Angles but its where the glamourous of LA must go to kick back! With its low-key, eclectic charm it is the perfect antidote to the bustle of the big cousin of LA! Ideally Santa Monica can be perfectly placed at the end of a long albeit tiring Californian Itinerary, I mean its just 12 Miles from LAX!

So what would you do in Santa Monica?

1. You would find yourself some luxurious beach front resorts:

First step in having yourself a relaxing holiday is to find yourself a luxury resort. Santa Monica has one for each mood. With its breezy and beach chic rooms Shutters on the Beach, is perfect for the young and the funky. Casa-Del-Mer is for those who want to glimpse and occasional Hollywood A-Lister and an ever present pacific! There are big brands of Fairmont and Shangri-La which give you guaranteed bragging rights! All of its 41 resorts in fact are just four miles from the beach, and its top notch service all addictive!

2. You would go to the Pier:

Santa Monica Pier is its most famous landmark, and rightly so. When you step on its boardwalk, you are immediately transported back to happier times. With rides, junk food and just about 200 games what more do you need. Its solar power ferries wheel is not just one of a kind in the region but it also offers some stunning views! By day check out the street performers, grad some popcorn and try your hand at some of the rides. Come sunset grab a beer, listen to some live music and just be!

3. You would eat, or just admire the food:

On thing you must do in Santa Monica is have donuts, and remember there is nothing as too much donuts. Try them all. Start off your day at Sidecar Donuts, famous for their huckleberry donuts and coffee. Lunch like a local at  FIG Restaurant or Urth Caffee. You can then find yourself at Perry Beach with your own private butler and delicious healthy dishes! At night you can find yourself at a Mechillin Star restaurant or a cosy beach front patio with endless happy hour offerings. Also Santa Monica is known for its farmers Market, it might cut into your sleeping time but its well worth it!

4. You would find some Murals:

Again there is no such thing as too many murals either, photograph each and every one and let the world also marvel at the beauty that that is Santa Monica! Staying true to its hip and quirky vibe, the city has more than 130 murals with its eight neighbourhoods. The mural movement started with Beautify Earth, a non-profit whose mission is to transform every wall into a beautiful piece of art. They started with Lincon Boulevard about six years ago, and today its become an international movement!

I mean just look at them!

5. You could visit Venice Beach:

Venice Beach is connected to Santa Monica beach and is just a little down the beach It has a totally different vibe and is really fun to explore. Its a little more boho but you will find Street Vendors, fortune tellers, chalk artists, restaurants, and food carts line the 1.5-mile Ocean Front Walk. You can get pierced or tattooed, get a healthy acai bowl or a greasy corndog, watch jugglers and skateboarders, there is something for everyone.

6. You would definitely Shop:

Santa Monica maybe small and laid back, but such is the nature of any luxury destination that it will always have a place to satisfy the shopaholic in you. Santa Monica could go head to head with its neighbour of Beverly hills and still come out unscathed. Its got the high rollers of  Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, Louis Vuitton etc. But what would distinguish SM is that from Lincoln to 17th Street, Montana Avenue you would find labels like Splendid, Jill Roberts and Margaret O’Leary. Since they have their own shops rather than being a part of a larger one they offer a more varied collection! You can also find the perfect souvenirs shop at the pier and take back some Santa Monica with you!

7. However, you would probably justend up being on the beach:

Just because it is the most obvious thing doesn’t mean it is also not the best. Santa Monica beach has an endless beach filled with volleyball courts and views. Bring an umbrella, drinks and snacks and even a volleyball if that’s your thing! Last, but not least, don’t forget to dip your toes in the Pacific Ocean!

Scandinavia

Santa Monica is where the all the cool kids are, and is it a wonder why? Just find your vibe and Santa Monica will mould itself around you!
